Silver Diamine Fluoride
SDF is a colorless liquid containing silver particles and fluoride ion. SDF kills the bacteria that cause tooth decay. This is an alternative treatment to traditional fillings and offers a non invasive way to control certain cavities. This painless treatment can buy time until a child can tolerate a restoration in the future or until the baby tooth falls out. SDF is often recommended for young children, children that cannot tolerate traditional restorative treatment and people with disabilities.
SDF has been used in other countries around the world for decades but is relatively new in the United States. Approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use in 2014. Giving families a faster, painless and less expensive option for treatment. This liquid is simply applied with a small brush and needs two treatments within a year.
The down side to this treatment is that is turns the decay black. Healthy tooth structure and gums are not stained. There can be some temporary staining if the liquid gets in contact with surrounding areas. In some cases, a glass ionomer can be placed over SDF treated area to reduce the look of the stain.
