At Golden Kids Dental & Orthodontics, we provide gentle laser frenectomy treatment for infants, children, and teens throughout Lakewood, Arvada, Evergreen, Wheat Ridge, Morrison, West Pleasant View, and surrounding Colorado communities. Our pediatric dental team uses advanced soft tissue laser technology to perform tongue tie and lip tie procedures safely, comfortably, and efficiently.

Laser frenectomy treatment can help improve feeding difficulties in infants, support healthy oral development, assist with speech concerns, and improve orthodontic outcomes for growing smiles.

What Is a Frenum?

A frenum, also called a frenulum, is a small band of soft tissue located inside the mouth that connects the lips, cheeks, or tongue to surrounding oral structures. Everyone has several frenums within the mouth.

The primary oral frenums include:

  • Maxillary Labial Frenum
The upper lip frenum connects the inside of the upper lip to the gum tissue above the upper front teeth.
  • Mandibular Labial Frenum
The lower lip frenum connects the inside of the lower lip to the gum tissue beneath the lower front teeth.
  • Lingual Frenum
The lingual frenum is located underneath the tongue and connects the tongue to the floor of the mouth.

In some cases, these tissues may be excessively tight, thick, or restrictive, leading to oral function concerns that may benefit from frenectomy treatment.

What Is a Frenectomy?

A frenectomy is a minimally invasive procedure that releases or removes restrictive frenum tissue to improve movement and oral function. Pediatric dentists and orthodontists commonly recommend frenectomies when tight tissue interferes with feeding, speech, oral development, or orthodontic treatment.

A laser frenectomy may be recommended for:

  • Tongue tie treatment in infants and children
  • Lip tie treatment
  • Breastfeeding difficulties
  • Speech concerns
  • Orthodontic spacing issues
  • Gum tissue pulling or tension
  • Restricted tongue movement

At Golden Kids Dental & Orthodontics, we use advanced diode laser technology to perform comfortable, precise frenectomy procedures with minimal discomfort and faster healing.

Frenectomy2.jpgInfant Tongue Tie Treatment

A tongue tie occurs when the lingual frenum beneath the tongue is too tight or restrictive, limiting normal tongue movement. In infants, tongue tie can interfere with breastfeeding and proper feeding function.

Common signs of tongue tie in infants may include:

  • Difficulty latching during breastfeeding
  • Clicking sounds while feeding
  • Poor milk transfer
  • Slow weight gain
  • Prolonged feeding times
  • Maternal nipple pain during nursing
  • Frustration or fatigue during feedings

When tongue movement is restricted, infants may struggle to nurse effectively, which can affect both baby and mother. Early tongue tie treatment may improve feeding comfort and efficiency.

A lip tie occurs when the upper lip frenum is unusually tight or thick, limiting the lip’s ability to properly flange or seal during feeding.

Symptoms of lip tie may include:

  • Difficulty maintaining latch
  • Excess air intake during feeding
  • Gassiness or fussiness
  • Milk leakage during feeding
  • Feeding frustration

Laser lip tie treatment can help improve feeding function and reduce discomfort for infants and parents.

In some orthodontic cases, excess gum tissue or a thick upper lip frenum may contribute to spacing issues between the upper front teeth. Even after braces or orthodontic treatment, this tissue can sometimes cause gaps to reopen.

Our orthodontist may recommend a maxillary frenectomy to:

  • Help maintain orthodontic results
  • Reduce spacing relapse
  • Improve gum tissue positioning
  • Support long term smile stability

By combining pediatric dentistry and orthodontics under one roof, our team can provide coordinated care for growing smiles.

Frenectomy6.jpgBenefits of Laser Frenectomy Treatment

At Golden Kids Dental & Orthodontics, we use a modern diode laser for tongue tie and lip tie procedures. Unlike traditional scalpels, the laser uses concentrated light energy to gently vaporize soft tissue with exceptional precision.

Benefits of laser frenectomy treatment include:

  • Minimally invasive procedure
  • Faster healing
  • Reduced bleeding
  • Instant tissue sealing and hemostasis
  • Less post operative discomfort
  • Lower risk of infection
  • Minimal swelling
  • Reduced scarring
  • No sutures in many cases
  • Improved comfort for infants and children

Laser technology also provides a clean, sterile treatment environment and helps support healthy tissue regeneration during healing.
