Silver Diamine Fluoride

Silver Diamine Fluoride, commonly called SDF, is a safe and minimally invasive pediatric dental treatment used to help stop tooth decay and cavities in children. At Golden Kids Dental & Orthodontics, we provide Silver Diamine Fluoride treatment for children throughout Lakewood, Arvada, Evergreen, Wheat Ridge, Morrison, West Pleasant View, and surrounding Colorado communities as part of our commitment to preventive and conservative pediatric dental care.

SDF is a clear liquid containing silver particles and fluoride ions that work together to kill cavity causing bacteria, strengthen tooth structure, and slow or stop the progression of tooth decay. This treatment offers an alternative to traditional fillings for certain cavities and can often help children avoid more extensive dental procedures.

What Is Silver Diamine Fluoride?

Silver Diamine Fluoride is a non invasive cavity treatment that is applied directly to areas of tooth decay using a small brush. The silver helps eliminate bacteria while the fluoride strengthens weakened enamel and dentin.

SDF is commonly recommended for:

  • Young children with cavities
  • Children who are anxious about dental treatment
  • Patients who may not tolerate traditional fillings
  • Children with special healthcare needs
  • Baby teeth nearing natural exfoliation
  • Early cavities that may not yet require restorative treatment

Because the procedure is fast, painless, and does not require drilling or numbing, many families choose Silver Diamine Fluoride as a conservative pediatric dental treatment option.

Benefits of Silver Diamine Fluoride for Children

Silver Diamine Fluoride offers several important advantages for children and parents, including:

  • Helps stop cavity progression
  • Non invasive and painless treatment
  • No drilling or injections required
  • Quick application process
  • Helps delay or avoid more extensive treatment
  • Safe and effective cavity management
  • Lower cost alternative in certain cases

SDF can be especially beneficial for younger children who may not yet be ready for traditional restorative dental procedures.

What to Expect During SDF Treatment

Applying Silver Diamine Fluoride is simple and comfortable for children. During the procedure:

  1. The tooth is gently cleaned and dried
  2. A small amount of SDF liquid is applied to the cavity
  3. The liquid is allowed to absorb into the affected area

The entire process only takes a few minutes and children can usually return to normal activities immediately afterward.

In many cases, 2 applications are recommended within a 12 month period to maximize effectiveness and help maintain cavity control.

Does Silver Diamine Fluoride Turn Teeth Black?

One important consideration with Silver Diamine Fluoride treatment is that it darkens the decayed portion of the tooth. Areas affected by cavities will typically turn dark brown or black after treatment. Healthy tooth structure and gums are not permanently stained.

This darkening is actually a sign that the treatment is working to stop the decay process.

In some situations, our pediatric dentists may recommend placing a tooth colored material such as glass ionomer over the treated area to help improve appearance while still benefiting from the protection provided by SDF.

Safe & Effective Pediatric Dental Treatment

Silver Diamine Fluoride has been used internationally for decades and was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 2014. Today, it is widely used in pediatric dentistry as a safe and effective treatment option for managing cavities in children.

At Golden Kids Dental & Orthodontics, our goal is always to provide treatment options that prioritize your child’s comfort, oral health, and long term well being. We carefully evaluate each child’s needs and discuss all available treatment options with parents before recommending SDF.
