Sedation
Nitrous oxide:
Also known as laughing gas, you parents may have had this at one of your own dental visits. A lower, more appropriate and safe dosage is used on children. Nitrous oxide reduces the ability to sense physical or mental discomfort and can make time seem to pass more quickly. A nose mask delivers a mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen. Patients tend to relax, making them calmer so that they are more able be still and be compliant during procedure appointments. At the end of appointment, pure oxygen is given and nitrous oxide leaves the patients system within minutes.
In house general anesthesia:
Our pediatric dentists work closely with a group of anesthesiologists to provide dental care under general anesthesia in our office. This is ideal for some children who cannot tolerate regular dental procedures, are very young, have a lot of dental work to be done, high anxiety and or special needs. Having dental work done by familiar faces and in a familiar setting, is comforting to some children and their families.
General anesthesia at Children's Hospital Colorado:
Our pediatric dentist's have operating privileges at Children's hospital of Colorado, a ranked top 10 hospital by US News and World Report. If your child needs extensive dental treatment, is very young, has high anxiety and/or special needs, the doctor may recommend a hospital setting under general anesthesia.
These sedation options will be discussed with you in detail if your child is recommended for these services that we provide. Our goal is to provide the best care for our patients and to build positive experiences with dental visits.
